Counseling vs. Coaching
Counseling: A professional counselor is one who is trained in counseling services. Counselors and Therapists operate in a similar fashion. Both are trained in determining the client’s needs, diagnosis, and developing a treatment plan. Counseling focuses on the client’s past and present.
Coaching: A coach provides direction and support in a particular area of life. The focus of coaching is not on healing a particular wound in someone’s life, but instead on giving direction to the client to assist them in meeting their goals. Coaching focuses on the client’s present and future.
Which is best for you?
This can be determined during the initial assessment. Some people have an uneasy feeling when they hear the words counseling or therapy. If they cause hesitation for you, then you may want to consider coaching. Both can be effective depending on what you need. Certain States have laws against providing counseling or therapy services over the telephone or internet. This too can be determined during the initial assessment.
Whether you are receiving counseling or coaching services, the focus will be on helping you today to grow more into the person that you want to be. In either service, it is important that you and I are compatible. If there is not a good fit or if what you need is beyond my scope of training, then I can provide referrals as needed.
